Carpet Shampooing vs Steam Cleaning in Ottawa: What Your Booking Includes
Looking for carpet shampooing or steam cleaning in Ottawa? Those names can describe the deep cleaning you have in mind, but they do not always describe the same method. Ottawa Sofa & Carpet Cleaning combines professional cleaning products, suitable agitation and heated rinsing and extraction when the carpet or fabric allows it. Here is what that means when you book.

Why Hot-Water Extraction Is Called Steam Cleaning
In the carpet trade, steam cleaning is a common name for hot-water extraction. The Carpet and Rug Institute uses both names when discussing deep cleaning. An extractor applies liquid and recovers it with loosened soil; a separate vapour steamer works differently.
Our mobile extraction setup includes an inline water heater to heat the rinse water. We choose the approach to suit the material and condition rather than treating more heat as automatically better. The heater supports hot-water extraction; it does not mean we apply dry steam to your carpet. For a comparison of the machines themselves, read our steam cleaner vs carpet extractor guide.
What Does Carpet Shampooing Mean?
If you ask for carpet shampooing, tell us what needs cleaning and the result you hope to achieve. The word is often used for cleaning with a product and working out embedded soil. In professional method descriptions, shampooing can also mean a specific detergent-and-machine process.
Kärcher distinguishes a pre-spray-and-rinse method from a shampoo-and-rinse combination for carpets. The important booking question is how the material will be treated and how the loosened soil and cleaning solution will be recovered. For our suitable carpet jobs, professional pre-treatment and agitation are followed by rinsing and extraction.
What Our Cleaning Visit Includes
We assess the material, condition, traffic areas and marks before choosing the treatment. The process for suitable carpets includes:
- Dry vacuuming to remove loose soil before wet cleaning.
- A professional pre-spray selected for the fibre and type of soiling.
- Mechanical agitation, using our Oreck machine where appropriate, to help release soil.
- Heated rinsing and extraction with our mobile extractor and inline water heater.
- Air movement to support drying, with guidance for the conditions in your home.
These are parts of a cleaning process, rather than separate upgrades implied by the words shampooing and steam cleaning. The written quote confirms the work for your particular job. See our carpet cleaning service for the areas and surfaces we clean.
Couch Steam Cleaning and Upholstery Shampooing
The same everyday terms are used for sofas, couches, chairs and sectionals. Suitable water-cleanable upholstery can be treated with compatible cleaning products, appropriate gentle agitation and controlled hot-water extraction.
Furniture needs its own assessment. The care label, fabric, dyes, cushions and construction affect which products, moisture and heat are appropriate. We do not use a carpet rotary-shampoo procedure on a sofa. If the care instructions rule out wet cleaning, we respect that limit. Our upholstery cleaning service and W, S, WS and X cleaning codes guide explain the assessment further.
What Results and Drying Depend On
Cleaning can improve built-up soil and many everyday marks, but physical wear, fading and permanent colour changes may remain. Carpet backing, cushion filling, moisture recovery, humidity and airflow all affect drying. We discuss realistic expectations and drying arrangements instead of promising the same result or drying time for every home.
